THE FRESH START EFFECT

I woke up with a thought echoing in my mind: why do people wait for the turn of the year to start new routines and activities, when, in reality, nothing truly changes—it is simply another day on the calendar?
What I did not know at the time is that there is a psychological phenomenon called the Fresh Start Effect. Temporal landmarks—such as the beginning of a new year, month, or week—help people mentally separate their “past self” (associated with mistakes and bad habits) from their “future self.”
This mental separation creates an opportunity to redefine one’s self-concept and approach goals with renewed optimism and motivation, allowing individuals to distance themselves from previous failures.
This perception of a new beginning often leads to:
Renewed motivation: an increase in optimism and belief in one’s ability to change, known as self-efficacy—the belief in one’s capacity to organize and execute actions required to achieve goals and handle future challenges. This belief is expressed through the mindset of “I can do this” and can be developed through successful experiences, observation, encouragement, and physical well-being.
Detachment from past failures: the ability to leave previous mistakes behind instead of feeling trapped by them.
Future-oriented focus: a greater tendency to set and pursue aspirational goals, such as starting a diet, joining a gym, or saving money.
Then a second concern arises: why do so many people start strong and give up within just a few days?
This happens because the Fresh Start Effect is temporary. Initial motivation tends to fade over time unless there is a conscious effort to change habits and behaviors. Sustaining change requires strategy, consistency, and patience—because habit change takes time and effort.
When someone truly needs transformation, whether in their career or personal life, tools must be used to support the execution of this new challenge. This process needs a solid foundation—one that allows the individual to develop a logical plan for personal and/or professional growth.
This is exactly where Strategic Planning comes into play.
Through strategic planning, the most difficult aspects to change are addressed within an appropriate framework, significantly increasing the likelihood of achieving desired goals. And planning is not limited to just one area of life—it can be applied to all of them.
You can plan:
the purchase of your own home;
weight loss;
the organization of your company;
the department or area you manage;
the launch of your own business.
In every area of life, there is room for Practical Strategic Planning. And it must be practical—otherwise, it does not work.
Since the Fresh Start Effect lasts only a few days, and without a strong commitment to change nothing truly happens, use the Practical Strategic Planning eBook to support you during this critical moment of transformation.
More than a new year, what is required are new behaviors embedded into your routine. And if you do not know how to put them into practice, nothing will change—another year will simply pass.
By learning how to apply Practical Strategic Planning, you will never start anything in your life without this tool again. Because it helps you think, plan, and execute what seems obvious—and very often, that “obvious” is not as clear as it should be.
